StructureTec completed an evaluation of the plaza at Cincinnati Financial, formerly known as Cincinnati Insurance Co., in Cincinnati, OH. The purpose of the evaluation was to identify underlying causes of current deterioration and to develop a repair solution and on-going maintenance program to extend the life of the structures.

 

It was determined that the plaza system had joint sealant failure throughout, as well as severe cracking due to freeze-thaw deterioration. StructureTec purposed repairing localized deterioration to minimize moisture ingress into the plaza system. This would significantly extend the useful life of these visually appealing pedestrian plazas.

 

Utilizing a design-build delivery method, StructureTec was able to design the proper repairs to remediate the plaza deck. Construction Services Group performed the following scope of work:

• Repaired isolated areas of damaged or deteriorated architectural concrete surface
• Removed existing sealant and provided all new sealant to plaza control joints, expansion joints, building perimeter joints, and material interface joints
• Restored concrete elements by crack injection
• Provided supplemental plaza drains to correct localized drainage deficiencies
• Removed and replaced damaged or deteriorated architectural amenities (benches, planters, etc.)

 

The end result was a leak-free, safe entry way that is visually appealing and has a much longer useful service life.
